Florida's oldest and largest university, the University of Florida traces its beginnings to the takeover of the non-public Kingsbury Academy in Ocala by the state-funded East Florida Seminary in 1853. The seminary moved  to Gainesville following the warfare and consolidated with the state's land-grant Florida Agricultural faculty, then in Lake town, to become the University of Florida in 1905.

Classes began Sep twenty six, 1906, with 102 male students. the first field consisted of 3 buildings: a storage facility and 2 dormitories, Buckman Hall and Thomas Hall. Actually, Thomas Hall was a mix of school rooms, offices, eating place and library. Until 1947, UF was for men solely and was one amongst solely 3 state universities, Florida State faculty for girls ( currently FSU) and Florida A & M. In 1947, the UF student body numbered eight,177 men and 601 ladies. School colours

In 1910, the university adopted orange and blue as its official colours, combining colours from the 2 faculties that united to make the UF. The University of Florida at Lake town had blue and white college colours and also the East Florida Seminary in Gainesville had orange and black.
